HPS (High Pressure Sodium) are the best available lamps for exclusive or complementary lighting. They are ideal for use in greenhouses and in indoor room gardens.
Not only is the best choice for flowering, but it also has two features that make it the most economical choice. Their average life is twice that of MH, but after 18,000 hours of use, they will start to pull more electricity than their nominal watts, while at the same time producing less light.
HPS lamps are very effective. They produce up to 140 lumens / watt. Their only disadvantage is that they are inadequate in the blue spectrum. If a gardener started a plant with a HPS lamp, he would see a spectacular increase in the plant. Most plants will be tall and thin and in a short time you will have to cut your plant so that it does not reach the lamp. The exception to this would be if the lamp was used in a greenhouse where it would have sunlight, which is more in the blue spectrum and there was no such thing as a tall plant.
